WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

Abnormally-enlarged breasts in men, known as “gynecomastia,” can usually be corrected through a simple procedure using a specialized form of surgery – liposuction. There are many possible causes of gynecomastia. However, in most cases the cause is unknown.

Due to genetics, use of certain medications, or other unspecified reasons, some men develop the appearance of enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia can present at any age, and male breast reduction can be performed safely and successfully on teenagers and adult men alike.

AM I AN APPROPRIATE CANDIDATE FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?

• If you are not comfortable to remove shirt in public, to swim, to participate in outdoor sports or gym
• If you want to improve your body contours and desire athletic look
• If you want to build up your confidence

Male breast reduction may be right for you if:

• You have had a thorough workup to rule out any medical condition as the cause of your gynecomastia
• You are seeking a more defined chest
• You are in good physical and emotional health
• You have realistic expectations

QUICK FACTS

• Liposuction alone is an effective treatment for gynecomastia in many cases
• Male breast reduction can also treat puffy nipples
• Most patients return to work or school in less than 1 week
• Results are typically permanent, but can be affected by weight gain or certain medications

TREATING GYNECOMASTIA

The condition can be treated permanently only by surgery, under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia.

• This may be by liposuction or open reduction or most commonly a combination of both. This depends on whether the condition is predominantly fatty, predominantly glandular or a combination of both.
• The procedure for treating gynecomastia with liposuction is typically performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
• It involves a small incision on each side of the chest. Depending on your needs and your cosmetic surgeon’s preferred technique, incisions may be located along a portion of the edge of the areola or within the armpit. Through these incisions, your cosmetic surgeon will remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue, at the same time sculpting a new chest contour that looks natural to your body.
• If the gland tissue is significant or it is too firm / hard, then it needs to be removed by open excision through a small incision through areola and Scar is barely noticeable.
• The excess loose skin after the surgery is usually allowed to shrink as much as possible using compression garment support.

Rarely in the most severe cases where the growth is like a female breast, the surgery may need to be similar to that done for a breast reduction in females with more visible scars.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY CONSULTATION?

During your initial consultation, you will meet with the plastic surgeon and their team.

Your previous surgeries, your medical history, medications you are presently taking, and your overall physical and emotional health will be reviewed.

Your skin quality will also be evaluated and procedure will be explained in detail.

Recovery time, costs, risks, and limitations associated with surgery will also be discussed.

The doctor’s patient coordinator will review treatment scheduling with you.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

Gynecomastia surgery is relatively conservative compared to other forms of plastic surgery.

However, risks are present and will be discussed in detail during our consultation.

An experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon has ways to mitigate surgical risks and optimize patient outcomes.

Our surgeons have years of clinical experience and are happy to talk with patients about the protocols in place to make surgical procedures safe and successful.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE FROM GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

• Outpatient procedure
• You may have some swelling, bruising & discomfort in the first 24-48 hours. This is only temporary and diminishes as the recovery proceeds.
• You can start your daily routine work from next day after the surgery and can go for a walk etc. but avoid sudden movements, lifting weights.
• You can return to job which doesn’t involve physical activity on day 3.
• By 6-8 weeks ,all types of physical activities can be resumed after consulting your surgeon.
• The most common side effects patients experience after these procedures include swelling, soreness, and bruising.Soreness and tenderness can be managed with prescription painkillers.
• The compression garment that is placed after surgery helps to reduce swelling and also to promote comfort by keeping the chest protected and supported. Patients will wear their compression garments for about 4- 6 weeks.
• Some men experience a loss of sensation in the treated areas after a male breast reduction, but this is almost always temporary. Any loss of sensation should gradually return over the months following your procedure.

HOW CAN I MAINTAIN MY RESULTS?

• Male breast reduction results are meant to be permanent – the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin, once removed are gone for good. However, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
• Significant weight gain, steroid abuse, or certain medical conditions which cause hormonal imbalances could result in a recurrence of fatty gynecomastia.
• Patients are encouraged to follow a healthy diet that includes whole foods and minimizes processed food, fast food, sugar, and alcohol.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO BEFORE SURGERY?

The most important thing about planning your surgery is to choose the correct qualified Aesthetic plastic surgeon. More specifically, ensure that the chosen surgeon is routinely performing gynaecomastia surgeries.

MEDICATIONS:

You must STOP the following medications approximately 2 weeks before surgery – blood thinners such as ecosprin, clopidogrel, warfarin etc, estrogen containing hormones, Vitamin E, ginseng, green tea, gingko balboa, garlic pearls, ayurvedic supplements.

SMOKING:

It is imperative that you completely stop smoking for a minimum of 1 week prior to your planned date of surgery as it can significantly increase your risk for anaesthesia as well as delay wound healing and increase your risk for post-surgery complications.

FITNESS:

You will be advised a set of routine pre-operative investigations to ensure that you are fit for anaesthesia and surgery. A mammogram is also advisable prior to surgery to rule out any existing lumps or lesions in the breast. If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, then a detailed baseline mammogram is mandatory to ensure absence of any existing lesion.
